For many students, it’s a common practice to look for opportunities to help our environment whenever possible. That may be by joining eco-friendly clubs, avoiding the use of plastic bags and plastic bottles, volunteering at local recycling events, or by committing to picking up trash when visiting the park.

While you’re practicing simple ways to be eco-friendly, you can also secure financial aid and avoid student loans with green-themed scholarships! From plastic reduction efforts to encouraging green policies, scholarship providers are also looking for ways to protect the environment.

Environmental Scholarships
Earth Island Institute: Brower Youth Award
You must have played a major leadership role in creating, organizing, and implementing an environmental project to be eligible for this award. Deadline: 5/14/22Award Amount: $3,000
“A Voice for Animals” Contest
To be considered, 14- to 15-year-old students must submit an essay addressing the mistreatment of one animal species, or one cause of animal suffering, and present ideas to raise awareness of this species and what can be done to protect it. Students who are aged 16 to 18 must write an essay or submit a short video that addresses either the mistreatment of one animal species or one cause of animal suffering; or the preservation of one endangered species, occurring anywhere in the world, and potential solutions to alleviate animal suffering. Essays can also consider how alternative energy has affected terrestrial and marine wildlife, and what improvements can be made to protect these animals. Deadline: 5/31/22

American Ground Water Trust: Bariod Scholarship
Students must intend to pursue a career in a ground water-related field and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to qualify for this award. Deadline: 6/30/22Award Amount: $2,000
Ocean Awareness Contest
Students are invited to learn about the climate crisis and its impact on oceans; discover or imagine solutions at local, national, or global scales; and create work that explores hope in action. Submissions are accepted in visual art, creative writing, film, interactive and multimedia, music and dance, poetry, and spoken word. Deadline: 6/13/22Award Amount: $1,500
Claes Nobel Good Earth Sustainability Scholarship
This award is available to high school and college students with a dedicated passion for conservation, sustainability, environmental policy, or preservation for the Earth. To be considered, you must submit a 500 - to 800 - word essay on the following topic: "I hope soon, you shall gain a new world view that fosters global stability and the cultivation of love and virtue."
